New Ways to Experience Disneyland Park Attractions Throughout 2016

January 12, 2016

If you have ever wondered how the Disneyland® Railroad steam engines run, or what Jungle Cruise skippers do when they aren’t in their boats, you’ll soon have a chance to find out.

Beginning this month, Disneyland Park Guests will have unique, limited-time opportunities to experience some of their favorite attractions in new ways.

While the Disneyland Railroad is temporarily closed this year, Guests at the Main Street and New Orleans Square Train Stations will be able to get up-close with the historic steam engines that have circled Disneyland Park for decades, learn about these amazing machines firsthand from our own train engineers and even take a picture with an engine! Each engine will be accompanied by knowledgeable train engineers, who will share fun facts, details on how the engines operate, stories from the history of the Disneyland Railroad and more.

And, while the world-famous Jungle Cruise undergoes refurbishment early this year, the skippers will still share their stories, adventures and humor with Disneyland Park Guests in front of the attraction. They’ll recount tales from their travels while the Jungle Navigation Company headquarters readies for reopening later this year.

Look for these special opportunities and more – including new, limited-time experiences aboard the Mark Twain Riverboat and Sailing Ship Columbia – throughout the year at Disneyland Park.

Paint the Night Parade Dining Package

December 21, 2015

Paint the Night Parade Dining Package

A great way to enjoy Disneyland’s “Paint the Night” Parade without having to stake out a viewing location in advance is to purchase a Paint the Night Parade Dining Package!  There are currently two options available:

At Blue Bayou Restaurant, the Paint the Night Parade dining package is offered with regular dinner service and menu from 4 p.m. – close. You can enjoy an appetizer, entrée and choice of dessert. Kids’ meals are available for guests ages 3-9.

Aladdin’s Oasis will have special On-the-Go meals that include “Paint the Night” Parade viewing. Meals can be picked up beginning at noon. Adult entrees include salad with choice of dressing, dinner roll, marbled cheesecake and a beverage in addition to a choice of herb-marinated grilled chicken with seasonal vegetables, lasagna Bolognese or vegetarian lasagna. Kids’ meals include seasonal vegetables, fresh fruit, a dinner roll, Mickey-shaped cookie and a beverage in addition to a choice of herb-marinated chicken, pasta, or macaroni and cheese

Each dining package includes a voucher for preferred viewing of “Paint the Night” parade for that day. The voucher will list the location, arrival time and show performance time for the parade viewing. Availability of Paint the Night Parade Dining packages are limited.

Given the popularity of the Paint the Night parade, I’m fairly excited about the option to purchase the Paint the Night Parade Dining Package.  The first parade available with the package is on January 11, 2016.

Spider-Man at Disneyland!

October 13, 2015

Spider-Man at Disneyland

I love when I’m right, and I am loving the Marvel Super Heroes at Disneyland! As I mentioned in my blog post when Innoventions closed earlier this year, I had a feeling they would keep Marvel characters in that area. And today Disney confirmed that I was correct in my assumptions when they announced that Spider-Man in Disneyland is happening beginning on November 16th.

Not only that, but they have apparently officially transformed the Innoventions building into Super Hero HQ! Which means you’ll still be able to meet Thor or check out the Iron Man tech. But what about Captain America?

According to the Disney Parks Blog, Cap won’t be present at Disneyland this fall. But the Super Hero HQ meet & greet location is designed to host different super heroes from time to time, so I’m taking this to mean that Spider-Man man leave at some point, and Captain America could easily return, along with any number of other heroes.

The big question I have right now is: When are the Super Villains going to make an appearance?!?

Here’s the official info on Spider-Man at Disneyland and Superhero Headquarters

When the reimagined Super Hero HQ opens this fall at Disneyland® Park, everyone’s favorite web slinger is swinging in for the occasion. That’s right! Spider-Man will be making his Disneyland Resort debut in a heroic new character greeting location, where your Clients can snap a photo, grab an autograph or just thank him for keeping everyone safe from the likes of Doctor Octopus and the Green Goblin!

Super Hero HQ is the West Coast home base of some of the greatest heroes in the universe. It’s the place to go, not only to meet some of those heroes, but to discover the super hero within. Your Clients can tour Treasures of Asgard and cross the Bifrost to come face-to-face with the mighty Avenger, Thor. They can also virtually suit up as Iron Man and check out the Hall of Armor at Iron Man Tech Presented by Stark Industries, play some of the latest games in the Game Center and pick up some Super Hero gear to take with them on their journey home.

Super Hero HQ opens Nov.16, 2015 in the Tomorrowland Expo Center at Disneyland Park.

Innoventions at Disneyland is closing!

Innoventions in Disneyland

Iron Man Tech on display in Innoventions at Disneyland (presented by Stark Industries)

I just found out that Innoventions at Disneyland is closing.  This location, which was the first home to Carousel of Progress after the Worlds Fair, is currently home to Meet and Greets for several Marvel superhero characters, including Captain America and Thor.  There’s also a cool display of Iron Man technology.  Apparently, Innoventions at Disneyland in its current form will be closing permanently on March 31, 2015.

Since I won’t be at Disneyland this year until August for the D23 Expo, I am really glad I got to experience it last year.  (I call Walt Disney World my home Disney Park, and they can’t have Marvel characters there yet.)  But the big question for me is, “What are they going to put in there next?

Innoventions at Disneyland

The god of Thunder meets the god of Disney Vacation Planning.

I don’t have much in the way of speculation.  There is plenty of talk about the Innoventions building becoming part of a new Star Wars area, but I have a feeling Disney is reserving the lion’s share of Star Wars for Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

If I had to guess, I’d say Disney is going to keep Marvel characters in play at this location.  They can’t use Marvel characters at Walt Disney World, and I don’t see why they wouldn’t want to continue to exploit such a great concept in at least one of their theme parks.  I don’t think Tomorrowland is the ideal location for Marvel, but the theme of Tomorrowland is already diluted enough that it isn’t going to make much of a difference at this point.

Of course, maybe there is going to be some tie-in to the Tomorrowland movie being released in May.  I don’t know enough about the film to even speculate about what Disney could do with that, but it’s certainly a possibility.

Luigi’s Flying Tires Closing at Disney California Adventure!

February 7, 2015

Luigi's Flying Tires

I can’t say I didn’t see this coming.  Luigi’s Flying Tires is closing.  From the outset, it was doomed to failure.  Essentially an updated version of one of Disneyland’s early attractions, the Flying Saucers, this attraction brought updated technology and a fun theme.  Unfortunately, it had the same issues that plagued its more primitive predecessor — long load/unload times and a fun factor too low to warrant dealing with the associated long wait times.

I experienced this myself firsthand.  After riding it twice — once to “learn the ropes” and a second time to fully enjoy it — I decided that it was worth a ten minute wait at the most.  Although it had a very fun “feel” to it, kind of like a combination between bumper cars and air hockey, it just didn’t have anything special about it.  Compared to the fun and lively Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree and the incredible Radiator Springs Racers, Luigi’s Flying Tires just seemed deflated.

To be fair, the queue for Luigi’s Flying Tires is nothing short of brilliant, in my opinion.  Like the rest of Carsland, it is just like you walked into the Cars movie.

Fortunately, there are no plans to change the queue, only the actual ride.  I’m not sure what it will entail beyond using the same space and a new ride system with new vehicles, as you can see in the concept art:

Luigi's New Ride

The picture really doesn’t tell much of a story, and I’m at a loss as to what they could do with the current open space that would be remotely interesting.  But that’s a problem for the Disney Imagineers to solve, not me.  With the new attraction is set to open in “early 2016,” I’m sure the Imagineers are already hard at work.
