Top Reasons to Visit Epcot International Food & Wine Festival

September 13, 2016

From cooking demos and live music to delicious food and wine, there are so many reasons for you to experience this year’s Epcot® International Food & Wine Festival at Walt Disney World® Resort! Let’s take a closer look at one of those tempting opportunities – the Rockin’ Burger Block Party.

Rockin’ Burger Block Party

When you think of burgers, they usually start with beef and a bun – but the rules are different at this event. You might find the beginnings of a traditional sandwich, and then the chefs take the flavor to a whole new level with patties like an Indian-inspired Malai Chicken Mushroom Burger or a pork slider with aji amarillo chile slaw and avocado on brioche.

These are just two of seven impressive burgers at the first party on Sept. 30, 2016. Other parties will take place on Oct. 14 and Nov. 11 where all-new creations will be featured, with music and plenty of libations adding to the fun. You can even vote for your favorite burger!

Check out all the top reasons for you to visit the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival Sept. 14-Nov. 14, 2016 in this video!

Jungle Skipper Canteen Restaurant is open!

December 14, 2015

Jungle Skipper Canteen Restaurant

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Skipper Canteen (a.k.a. Jungle Skipper Canteen restaurant) was has a “soft opening” this weekend.  Although it won’t officially open until Wednesday, there are already pictures of the food and video of the interior circulating around the internet.  From what I’ve seen so far, it looks fantastic!  I’m especially happy with the menu.

It is different and unique.  While I’m sure it isn’t to everyone’s tastes, I think that is great!  The Magic Kingdom was really in need of a table service restaurant which would shake things up a bit.  I think Disney really delivered and I can’t wait to try it for myself next month.

Here’s the official word from Disney, followed by a video of the interior from my friend John (aka Big Fat Panda):

Beginning Dec. 16, 2015, you can set off on a culinary adventure featuring “World Famous Jungle Cuisine” at the new Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen in Magic Kingdom® Park at Walt Disney World® Resort.

Located steps from the legendary Jungle Cruise attraction, this new 222-seat table-service restaurant is staffed by the wisecracking crew of the Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd.  Diners are seated in one of three dining destinations inside the company’s headquarters-turned-restaurant: the mess hall; the jungle-inspired parlor once used by the company’s founder, Dr. Albert Falls and his family; or the former meeting room of the mysterious Society of Explorers and Adventurers.

The adventurous menu features bold and flavorful tastes inspired by the exotic flavors of the rivers traveled on the Jungle Cruise. You can try Trader Sam’s head-on shrimp, Dr. Falls’ signature grilled steak or the house-made arepas with slow-cooked beef, black beans, tostones and queso fresco. Little ones can enjoy items such as Junior Skip’s special mac and cheese. And for dessert, there is a Kungaloosh! – an African-inspired chocolate cake served with caramelized bananas and cashew-caramel ice cream. Refreshing non-alcoholic specialty beverages, Punch Line punch and Schweitzer Slush, will also be offered.

The Disney Dining Plan will be accepted at Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen. Reservations are not currently being offered.

As you might have heard, the Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Skipper Canteen (a.k.a. Jungle Skipper Canteen) restaurant is opening in Adventureland in the Magic Kingdom later this year.  I’m fairly excited about it.  I used to love the Adventureland Veranda back in the day, and I’ve always lamented how that wonderful space hasn’t been used for much more than character greetings for many, many years.  And in a park that really needs another standout Table Service restaurant, I was thrilled to learn quite some time ago that Disney was going to put a restaurant back in that prime space.

Being a nostalgic, I admit I had hoped for a return of the Adventureland Veranda itself.  But when they officially announced the new restaurant I was very pleased with the concept.  The official description would be:

Jungle Cruise® fans can look forward to the brand-new Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Skipper Canteen restaurant opening in Magic Kingdom® Park late 2015. At the Jungle Skipper Canteen, Guests will be able to experience “World Famous Jungle Cuisine” in one of several unique dining rooms – including a crew mess hall and a once-hidden secret meeting room of the famed Society of Explorers and Adventurers. The restaurant will also be staffed by Jungle Cruise Skippers.

I don’t know exactly what this will all entail, but based on the description I suspect this will end up being a counter service (“Quick Service”) restaurant for lunch and a Table Service restaurant for dinner.  I know they can nail the decor, and if they can deliver the quality of food at Be Our Guest Restaurant AND bring the personality of the Jungle Cruise Skippers to the wait staff, Jungle Skipper Canteen is going to rock!

Here are some pictures of the Jungle Skipper Canteen restaurant under construction, courtesy of my friends Andy and Leah of Our Florida Project!
