2016 Epcot Flower & Garden Festival – 90 Days of Fun!

February 4, 2016

The 2016 Epcot Flower & Garden Festival will occur at Walt Disney World® Resort March 2-May 30, 2016 – expanding from 75 to 90 days. Here’s a look at what’s new as the festival celebrates its 23rd year!

2016 Epcot Flower & Garden Festival
At the 2016 Epcot Flower & Garden Festival, new culinary creations at the festival’s Outdoor Kitchens will introduce fresh variety and flavor to the offerings at a record 13 festival kiosks surrounding the World Showcase Promenade.  This year, La Isla Fresca takes you to the Caribbean for authentic bites, including Jamaican Braised Beef with Pigeon-Pea Rice and Jerk-Spiced Grouper or Chicken with Mango Salsa. And, at the new Cider House, a Field Greens salad with greens harvested at The Land pavilion, heirloom apples, Stilton cheese and dried blueberries will pair well with blueberry hard cider from Plant City, Florida.

At the park entrance, the first-ever Huey, Dewey and Louie topiaries will feature floral interpretations of Donald’s mischievous nephews inspired by the 1943 Donald Duck comic book called “The Victory Garden.”

A new hands-on Harmony Gardens musical playground will debut featuring Disney’s Fab Five topiaries of “band leader” Mickey Mouse, as well as Minnie Mouse, Goofy, Pluto and Donald Duck. With the playground’s interactive drums, chimes and xylophones, kids can create their own musical sounds.

And, as in previous years, each weekend at the Festival Center, you can dig in for a complimentary hands-on Gardening Seminar experience as they get tips from experts on a broad range of topics.

Plus, the Garden Rocks concert series returns with music spanning four decades. Blood, Sweat & Tears featuring Bo Bice, BRIAN HOWE, former lead singer of Bad Company, Georgia Satellites and Darlene Love make their Festival debut this year. Here’s the lineup (subject to change without notice):

Garden Rocks Concert Series to Debut at Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival

January 22, 2015

Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival

The Flower Power Concert Series has been replaced with the new Garden Rocks Concert Series.  Well, replaced really isn’t quite accurate.  It really seems to have been renamed.  I suppose it’s a subtle difference.

I’m really not quite sure why they renamed it.  Maybe they wanted to avoid confusion because there are fewer bands associated with the 1960’s?  Whatever it is being called, these concerts are always popular.  So popular, in fact, that you want to arrive very early if you want a spot in front.

This year, 11 pop bands are set to appear in the Garden Rocks Concert Series, which will take place March 4-May 17, 2015. The acts this year will include En Vogue, Little River Band, Jon Secada, Pablo Cruise and Taylor Dayne. Performances are at America Gardens Theatre at 5:30, 6:45 and 8:00 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and are included with Epcot admission.  Here is the current lineup which is, of course, subject to change without notice:

  • March 6-8: Gin Blossoms “Hey Jealousy”
  • March 13-15: Pablo Cruise “Love Will Find a Way”
  • March 20-22: En Vogue “Free Your Mind”
  • March 27-29: Starship “We Built This City”
  • April 3-5: The Orchestra starring former members of ELO “Evil Woman”
  • April 10-12: Village People “Y.M.C.A.”
  • April 17-19: Jon Secada “Just Another Day”
  • April 24-26: The Guess Who “These Eyes”
  • May 1-3: Taylor Dayne “Tell It to My Heart”
  • May 8-10: Little River Band “Lady”
  • May 15-17: Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone “I’m Henry the VIII, I Am”

Tasty Tuesday – Watermelon Delight at Spice Road Table

January 20, 2015

Spice Road Table Sign

I have a confession to make.  I love interesting new drinks that are brightly colored and come in fancy glasses.  Yet I am constantly disappointed when I go to restaurants because, almost everywhere, the drinks that look neat and have fun names all contain alcohol.  This is a problem because I don’t drink alcohol.

Yet, I never give up hope.  My eyes are always open, looking for that rare gem of a beverage with a detailed description and designated with (non-alcoholic) next to it.  They exist in spades on Disney Cruise Line ships.  (There are so many, I even wrote an article about them for the Disney Food Blog a few years ago.)  But in Walt Disney World, they are harder to come by.

Now my friends know how I am about this, so I was excited when John Saccheri mentioned there was a drink I had to try over at Spice Road Table in the Morocco Pavilion at Epcot.  He couldn’t remember the name of it, but he said, “If you like watermelon, you’re going to love it.”

I made my way to Spice Road Table at the next opportunity and headed straight for the bar to look over the drinks.  There it was — Watermelon Delight!

Spice Road Table Bar Menu

The description intrigued me:  Watermelon, Cranberry Juice, and Orange water.  Was that supposed to mean watermelon juice, or did they just blend watermelon in with the cranberry juice and orange water?  And what the heck is orange water, anyway?  While I still don’t know the answers to these questions, but I ordered the drink.

Watermelon Delight

It looks kind of plain in that plastic cup, but let me tell you — it was a really good drink.  It tasted like I was drinking a sweet, cold, flavorful watermelon.  I really loved the drink.  I could easily see this being a favorite, especially on a hot Florida afternoon.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t very impressed with the price.  While I certainly don’t mind paying $5.99 for a good drink, seeing the Watermelon Delight right there next to $9.99 alcoholic drinks made me wonder whether the price for orange water is as high as the price of  vodka or rum.

Canadian Lumberjacks Show at Epcot

October 16, 2014
You won't find them on a Disney Cruise...

You won’t find them on a Disney Cruise…

The Canadian Lumberjacks show is now officially appearing as World Showcase Entertainment in Canada.  These lumbermen, representing Canada’s great timber and logging areas, demonstrate their skills in time-honored games of the great forest — axe throwing, chopping, sawing, beaver skinning, and lots more.

And it’s a good thing the Lumberjacks are experts with axes; it’s the only thing keeping disgruntled Off Kilter fans from storming the stage and lynching them.

Tasty Tuesday – Caramel Apple Oatmeal Cookie

October 14, 2014

Caramel Apple Oatmeal Cookie

The next time you’re in Epcot, head on over to the Germany Pavilion and stop by Karamell-Kuche.  One of my favorite treats is the Caramel Apple Oatmeal Cookie, and I almost didn’t buy it.  Actually, when I had planned that particular Disney vacation, I had an entire list of items I wanted to try at Karamell-Kuche, and that cookie was not on the list.  But as I was looking at the case, something about it appealed to me, and I ordered it.

I made an excellent choice.  These massive cookies are moist and chewy, and the homemade caramel drizzled on top accentuated the apple and combined with the oatmeal in a way that made my mouth happy.  Just one warning: The cookies are stored in a refrigerated case, and it tastes better after the caramel gets warmed up by the Florida heat and becomes nice and soft and gooey.
