“Once Upon A Time” replaces “Celebrate the Magic” on November 4th!

October 26, 2016

once-upon-a-time

I always felt like Celebrate the Magic got the short end of the stick.  Most often stuck right in between a showing of the Main Street Electrical Parade and Wishes, it never garnered the attention I thought it should.  I really loved it, though.  And while I’m sad to see Celebrate the Magic go (especially the Wreck-It Ralph sequence), this new show looks to be amazing.

Here’s the official line:

Classic Disney fairy tales light up Cinderella Castle as the projection show “Once Upon a Time” debuts at Magic Kingdom® Park at Walt Disney World® Resort on Nov. 4, 2016.

This new show uses projection-mapping technology to produce a dazzling three-dimensional effect that fits every nook and contour of the Castle, from its base to the tips of its towers and turrets.

The result: Cinderella Castle opens like a storybook and becomes living art, the canvas for a kaleidoscopic and eye-filling feast of fantasy.

Coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the timeless animated classic, Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” the new projection show is narrated by Mrs. Potts who shares “once upon a time” bedtime stories with Chip.

Projected scenes let you relive some of your favorite Disney moments. You’ll fly with Peter Pan high above the rooftops of London to Never Land, drop in on a whimsical tea party hosted by the Mad Hatter, and watch Winnie the Pooh rise to the top of the Castle while he hangs from a colorful balloon. And these are just some of the enchanting tales that come to life in “Once Upon a Time.”

The awe-inspiring show culminates with classic scenes from “Beauty and the Beast” – the Beast waltzing with his beloved Belle, his duel with Gaston, and finally his transformation back to the Prince. As Mrs. Potts and Chip conclude their bedtime story, the show moves to its grand finale including appearances by characters from some of Disney’s most beloved animated tales. Fireworks bursting above the Castle add to the magic.

“Once Upon a Time” takes its inspiration from a projection show that has thrilled guests at Tokyo Disney Resort since May 2014. The new show replaces the “Celebrate the Magic” Castle projection show that will end its four-year run on Nov. 3, 2016.

The Muppets in the Magic Kingdom!

July 30, 2016

Beginning this fall, you’ll be able to find the Muppets in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, where they’ll take part in an all-new live show, “The Muppets Present… Great Moments in American History.”

(Chloe Rice, photographer)

Sam Eagle, the fiercely patriotic American eagle who is forever trying to set a high moral standard for the Muppets, will join Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, The Great Gonzo and James Jefferson, town crier of Liberty Square, as they gather outside The Hall of Presidents to present historical tales in hysterical fashion as only they can. From the midnight ride of Paul Revere to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Muppets appear throughout the day to share with Guests, their own unique take on the founding fathers and the birth of the United States of America.

Featuring an original song and plenty of wacky Muppets humor, “The Muppets Present… Great Moments in American History” will make its debut in October 2016.

After initially wondering whether having the Muppets introduced into the normally serene atmosphere of Liberty Square was a good idea, I decided that it is actually a great idea!  I think a new and original show could introduce a lively element into the atmosphere.  I’m thinking something akin to the way Merlin appearing at the Sword in the Stone in Fantasyland used to liven up the atmosphere there a few times each day.  (You do remember when that used to happen, don’t you?)  Provided that the script and/or music is solid and well done (i.e., not a flimsy fluff piece), I believe there is great potential with this move.  I’m curious as to exactly how they’re going to pull this off.  Muppets in the upper windows, perhaps?

Jungle Skipper Canteen Restaurant is open!

December 14, 2015

Jungle Skipper Canteen Restaurant

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Skipper Canteen (a.k.a. Jungle Skipper Canteen restaurant) was has a “soft opening” this weekend.  Although it won’t officially open until Wednesday, there are already pictures of the food and video of the interior circulating around the internet.  From what I’ve seen so far, it looks fantastic!  I’m especially happy with the menu.

It is different and unique.  While I’m sure it isn’t to everyone’s tastes, I think that is great!  The Magic Kingdom was really in need of a table service restaurant which would shake things up a bit.  I think Disney really delivered and I can’t wait to try it for myself next month.

Here’s the official word from Disney, followed by a video of the interior from my friend John (aka Big Fat Panda):

Beginning Dec. 16, 2015, you can set off on a culinary adventure featuring “World Famous Jungle Cuisine” at the new Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen in Magic Kingdom® Park at Walt Disney World® Resort.

Located steps from the legendary Jungle Cruise attraction, this new 222-seat table-service restaurant is staffed by the wisecracking crew of the Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd.  Diners are seated in one of three dining destinations inside the company’s headquarters-turned-restaurant: the mess hall; the jungle-inspired parlor once used by the company’s founder, Dr. Albert Falls and his family; or the former meeting room of the mysterious Society of Explorers and Adventurers.

The adventurous menu features bold and flavorful tastes inspired by the exotic flavors of the rivers traveled on the Jungle Cruise. You can try Trader Sam’s head-on shrimp, Dr. Falls’ signature grilled steak or the house-made arepas with slow-cooked beef, black beans, tostones and queso fresco. Little ones can enjoy items such as Junior Skip’s special mac and cheese. And for dessert, there is a Kungaloosh! – an African-inspired chocolate cake served with caramelized bananas and cashew-caramel ice cream. Refreshing non-alcoholic specialty beverages, Punch Line punch and Schweitzer Slush, will also be offered.

The Disney Dining Plan will be accepted at Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen. Reservations are not currently being offered.

As you might have heard, the Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Skipper Canteen (a.k.a. Jungle Skipper Canteen) restaurant is opening in Adventureland in the Magic Kingdom later this year.  I’m fairly excited about it.  I used to love the Adventureland Veranda back in the day, and I’ve always lamented how that wonderful space hasn’t been used for much more than character greetings for many, many years.  And in a park that really needs another standout Table Service restaurant, I was thrilled to learn quite some time ago that Disney was going to put a restaurant back in that prime space.

Being a nostalgic, I admit I had hoped for a return of the Adventureland Veranda itself.  But when they officially announced the new restaurant I was very pleased with the concept.  The official description would be:

Jungle Cruise® fans can look forward to the brand-new Jungle Navigation Co., Ltd. Skipper Canteen restaurant opening in Magic Kingdom® Park late 2015. At the Jungle Skipper Canteen, Guests will be able to experience “World Famous Jungle Cuisine” in one of several unique dining rooms – including a crew mess hall and a once-hidden secret meeting room of the famed Society of Explorers and Adventurers. The restaurant will also be staffed by Jungle Cruise Skippers.

I don’t know exactly what this will all entail, but based on the description I suspect this will end up being a counter service (“Quick Service”) restaurant for lunch and a Table Service restaurant for dinner.  I know they can nail the decor, and if they can deliver the quality of food at Be Our Guest Restaurant AND bring the personality of the Jungle Cruise Skippers to the wait staff, Jungle Skipper Canteen is going to rock!

Here are some pictures of the Jungle Skipper Canteen restaurant under construction, courtesy of my friends Andy and Leah of Our Florida Project!
