Innoventions at Disneyland is closing!

Iron Man Tech on display in Innoventions at Disneyland (presented by Stark Industries)

I just found out that Innoventions at Disneyland is closing.  This location, which was the first home to Carousel of Progress after the Worlds Fair, is currently home to Meet and Greets for several Marvel superhero characters, including Captain America and Thor.  There’s also a cool display of Iron Man technology.  Apparently, Innoventions at Disneyland in its current form will be closing permanently on March 31, 2015.

Since I won’t be at Disneyland this year until August for the D23 Expo, I am really glad I got to experience it last year.  (I call Walt Disney World my home Disney Park, and they can’t have Marvel characters there yet.)  But the big question for me is, “What are they going to put in there next?

I don’t have much in the way of speculation.  There is plenty of talk about the Innoventions building becoming part of a new Star Wars area, but I have a feeling Disney is reserving the lion’s share of Star Wars for Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

If I had to guess, I’d say Disney is going to keep Marvel characters in play at this location.  They can’t use Marvel characters at Walt Disney World, and I don’t see why they wouldn’t want to continue to exploit such a great concept in at least one of their theme parks.  I don’t think Tomorrowland is the ideal location for Marvel, but the theme of Tomorrowland is already diluted enough that it isn’t going to make much of a difference at this point.

Of course, maybe there is going to be some tie-in to the Tomorrowland movie being released in May.  I don’t know enough about the film to even speculate about what Disney could do with that, but it’s certainly a possibility.

I think Tomorrowland COULD be the perfect land for much of the Marvel universe, especially the elements of that universe that focus on technology and space exploration. What they’d have to do is retheme Innoventions as some sort of Stark Expo and use that as some sort of portal for those characters and experiences.

My 3 year old nephew is coming to Disneyland the first week in May and we just found out that Innoventions is closing at the end of March. Do you know if the Marvel characters Captain America and Thor will be available for meet and greets around the park, or if those characters will be nonexistent?

    Thanks!

Hi Kasey! Disney hasn’t released any information about what will be happening to the Marvel character meet & greets when Innoventions closes. I will post information when it becomes available. Personally, I don’t believe Disney will have them gone for long.

Thank you very much for your reply and I’m looking forward to hearing more about where the characters will be going… Hopefully not gone until September while Innoventions is under refurbishment.

        Thanks!

On a seperate note, do you know if there is character dining for lunch and if so, which ones do you recommend for a 3 year old boy?

    Thanks!

Between the two choices at Disneyland or DCA, I’d go with The Plaza Inn for a 3-year old boy, although Ariel’s Grotto at DCA is really a much better *dining* experience. If you’re willing to look at character dining outside of the theme parks, I really think you should just hop on the Monorail and take him over to Goofy’s Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel.

Great! Thank you! Do you know if any of these options are available for character dining at lunch or dinner, or is it only breakfast?

        Thanks again!
